No one can blame you for wanting to use a great tanning lotion. A hot tan is a great summer asset and there’s no fault in wanting to have one. However, we live in a time when it’s irresponsible not to think about the impact of our product choices on the environment around us. Luckily, there are many good choices we can make to select the best suntan lotions while not harming the earth in the process.
Look for animal-friendly products. Animal testing is bad for the creatures that live on this earth.
Use a charity rewards credit card to buy the product. You get the lotion and a good green charity gets some money for your efforts.
Recycle or re-use the bottle. Be careful with re-use since the tanning lotion can impact whatever you’re using it for. Making art out of the bottles is one idea. Buying recyclable bottles is another one.
Know what’s in your suntan lotion. Natural products are typically better for the environment than chemical products. Of course, you don’t want to use a suntan lotion that includes rare natural products because then you’re risking plant life. Look for a balance.
It’s frustrating to buy things that you only wear a few times and then need to get rid of because it feels like such a waste. For example, adult Halloween costumes don’t get enough wear before it’s time to get rid of them to clear out the closets. If you’re creative, you can recycle these costumes so that they don’t just get tossed out after barely being used.
Here are some tips for recycling Halloween costumes:
Make wearable clothing. If you can sew, you can usually take the more subdued parts of a costume and add some fabric to create a wearable item. Capes and costume dresses can be turned into daywear dresses, for example.
Donate them. A lot of people out there can’t afford a brand new costume so they’ll put your donated costume to good use.
Recycle the parts. Check to see if any of the costume parts are made from recyclable materials and toss those into the recycle bin.
We don’t have to keep costumes forever and we don’t have to toss them out barely used either. Get creative and recycle them to save both money and the earth.
When I was a kid I loved doing a lot of crafts, and it’s carried over into adulthood. One craft I did with my students when I taught an after school daycare program was candlemaking. Kids love making stuff, and will especially love making something as cool as scented jar candles — something they can use and enjoy in addition to having the satisfaction of making it themselves.
You can get candlemaking kits at toy stores and craft stores that are made especially for kids. However, these kits don’t always include the best quality wax and often aren’t scented, so you might want to look into getting the supplies yourself individually and putting together your own project. You can also always add candle scent to these kits. Kids love stuff that smells good, so look up recipes for aromatherapy jar candles — you should be able to find some help online or in a craft book from the library.
As a word of caution, though, your child should never make candles unattended by an adult. Hot wax can cause some severe burns, and in any case you don’t want your child playing with the stove or a hot plate and trying to melt the candle wax on his or her own.
I recently went to dinner with a good friend who kept telling me about all of these travel plans that she had coming up in the near future. I listened politely for awhile but finally I just had to butt in and ask how she can possibly afford to travel when the cost of gas and airline tickets are both so high. Apparently my friend had stumbled across this when she had to do an interview with someone working for Synergy One, a group that’s involved with the P1D opportunity. She was skeptical at first but she decided to try it and she’s been happy. Her tan line says so! I’m thinking that perhaps I need to find out more about what this is all about.
The idea of choosing a house plan based on one’s own personal tastes can be more than exciting. It is not until one is faced with a vast number of design options that the process sometimes becomes overwhelming.
